Fall Vata

In Ayurvedic medicine there are 3 doshas that describe your Prakrit, or constitution - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These 3 doshas are genetically and emotionally predetermined, and exist in us in different proportions with one or more usually being more dominant than others. Our environment can either balance or aggravate our Prakriti. The intention is to bring the intersection of our inner and outer environments into balance so that we can access more health physically and emotionally.

Fall is Vata!!. This means that if you are more Vata dominant, you can be spiraled off balance quite easily and will need to make adjustments to balance. And even if your are not, you may be feeling the affects of this dry, windy season.

Vata is air and space. It is wind and the breath. Vata moves the energy that supports the organs like your heart and digestive tract. It is the energy that moves your mind with thoughts. Vata is dry and restless. Vata blows dry leaves off tree branches and keeps your mind up at night.

Eat more foods that are warming like soups. Drink hot tea spiced with fresh ginger, wrapped in a cozy blanket with a great book you have been meaning to read. Massage your body with warm sesame oil before stepping into the shower. Slow down and practice restorative yoga. Turn inward. Practice grounding Pranayama like Nadi Shodhana - alternate nostril breath. Get more sleep. Eat local - farmers markets now have plenty of root veggies and squashes that are grounding and nourishing. The food harvested at this time of year naturally balances the Vata dosha - mother natures way of taking care of us. Diffuse essential oils that are warming and spicy like frankincense, cinnamon and clove.

To learn what you Dosha is, click here and take the Prakriti evaluation. This website is a fabulous resource that I just discovered for natural products and information. An important aspect of your yoga practice is better self knowledge and self reflection - or Svadhyaya. The better you know yourself, the better equipped your are to make decisions about the health of your mind, your body and and your heart. Pay attention, listen, learn and be your own guru!!
